Petr Hajdyla presents a new series of paintings at this year’s POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair, returning to one of the most banal yet perhaps least resolvable questions of contemporary life: How do we make use of the time available to us?

The Chemistry Gallery’s presentation in Berlin follows last year’s exhibition The Beautiful Scent of Burning Ego, which was the gallery’s most successful exhibition of 2025, both commercially and in terms of visitor numbers.

While the Prague exhibition focused on a critical examination of performance and ambition, the new paintings turn to a less visible struggle: how we deal with our own time, and to what extent we are actually in control of our lives.

Hajdyla places the protagonists of his paintings in seemingly ordinary situations and everyday activities. In his work, however, familiar experiences subtly begin to shift. What was meant to provide relief becomes a source of discomfort; protection reveals its fragility; and time that we assumed was ours to use turns out to be something that is constantly slipping away.

Hajdyla’s humour emerges precisely from this contradiction. His paintings neither prescribe nor judge; rather, they capture the peculiar uncertainty that accompanies our attempts to organise our own lives. We want to enjoy life, protect what matters to us, and, if possible, keep things under control. At the same time, we are increasingly confronted with the limits of this idea.

The new series is not so much a reflection on how we should use our time as an exploration of the contradictions inherent in everyday life. “Perhaps we still have this feeling that we should somehow manage to live our lives well. And yet it is not at all clear what that actually means,” says Petr Hajdyla.

The Berlin presentation, under the auspices of The Chemistry Gallery, Booth A30, marks an important step towards reaching a broader international audience. POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair will take place from 10–13 September 2026 at Tempelhof in Berlin as part of Berlin Art Week.

Petr Hajdyla se na letošním POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair představí novou sérií obrazů, v níž se vrací k jedné z nejbanálnějších a zároveň nejméně řešitelných otázek současného člověka: Jak nakládáme s časem, který máme k dispozici?

The Chemistry Gallery na berlínskou prezentaci navazuje po loňské výstavě The Beautiful Scent of Burning Ego, která byla její komerčně i návštěvnicky nejúspěšnější výstavou roku 2025.

Zatímco pražská výstava se soustředila na kritický pohled na výkon a ambice, nové obrazy se dotýkají méně viditelného zápasu: jak nakládáme s vlastním časem a nakolik máme svůj život skutečně ve svých rukou.

Hajdyla staví protagonisty svých obrazů do zdánlivě běžných situací a činností. V jeho podání se však známá zkušenost nepozorovaně vychyluje. To, co mělo přinášet úlevu, se stává zdrojem nepohodlí, ochrana odhaluje svou křehkost a čas, o němž jsme předpokládali, že máme k dispozici, se ukazuje jako cosi, co nám neustále uniká.

Hajdylův humor vyrůstá právě z tohoto rozporu. Jeho obrazy nic nepředepisují ani nesoudí; spíše zachycují zvláštní nejistotu, která provází naši snahu uspořádat si vlastní život. Chceme si jej užít, chránit to, na čem nám záleží, a pokud možno mít věci ve svých rukou. Zároveň stále zřetelněji narážíme na hranice této představy.

Nová série není úvahou o tom, jak správně nakládat s časem, jako spíš zkoumáním rozporu každodenního života. „Možná máme pořád pocit, že bychom měli ten život nějak dobře zvládnout. Přitom vůbec není jasné, co to znamená,“ říká Petr Hajdyla.

Berlínská prezentace pod záštitou The Chemistry Gallery na stánku A30 je významným krokem směrem k širšímu mezinárodnímu publiku. POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair se uskuteční 10.–13. září 2026 v berlínském Tempelhofu v rámci Berlin Art Week.
